Gambling in the United States used to take place in saloons in the 1800s. There were no formal casinos. By 1920, almost all forms of gambling were outlawed and remained outlawed until 1931 when Nevada legalized gambling. This led to the opening of the first casino in 1941 on what was to become the Las Vegas Strip. Today, this area is one mega resort after the other. In 1978 online gambling was legalized in Atlantic City which led to the development of hotel casino resorts there. The passage of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act in 1988 legalized gambling on Indian tribal lands subject to licensing and regulation. This is what led to the spread of Indian tribal casinos. The latest movement has been to legalize lottery type electronic gaming at racetracks. Various approved racetracks in states like Delaware, Pennsylvania, Florida and other places offers slots and electronic free roulette and other forms of electronic gaming. Bookmaking was never legal in the U.S. because of the U.S. Wire law which outlaws gambling using the phone lines.
While all of this land based growth was taking place, the online casino industry was being challenged. Finally, Congress enacted and the President signed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. This legislation outlaws the financial institutions from processing the transfer of money between gamblers and gaming companies. This law is currently effective and the result is that many major gambling companies have departed from the U.S. market. There is hope that the law will be appealed.
